Ali Goodwin

As an avid sailor, I have been conditioned to always keep my eyes on the horizon, resulting in an unconscious reaction to subtle changes and shifts in wind, water and weather. My recent experience living on Mount Desert Island, in an isolated, often extreme landscape, has exposed me to inspiring acts of nature - color, sound and light that has made a mark on my creative expression as an artist.

I have been a photographer for many years, and have taken thousands of photographs of the sea and sky, focusing on the tension and texture, order and chaos, on either side of the horizon line. I look for cloud formations and weather patterns that create a distinct color, light or texture. I photograph these moments and then manipulate the images, often exaggerating an element such as a cloud or a wave. The altered photographs form the basis for my paintings.

As a graphic designer in the digital age, painting is an opportunity to express myself creatively with my hands, while allowing me to utilize the tools of my trade. When I work with oil paints I am reminded that, like nature, there is an ebb and flow to the medium, and layers of color are just as much a part of what happens on the canvas as what happens in the skies or on the sea.
