Johanna has been an artist since her early years. More recently, she was trained in the tradition of hand bookbinding at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, MA. As an artist and craftsperson she uses her creativity and skills to create one of a kind pieces she refers to as “Book Objects” or “Artist’s Books”. These books are made with the techniques used by fine bookbinders for centuries – folding and sewing signatures, covering spines in leather, attaching cover boards – but often resemble something other than the traditional rectangular book. These Book Objects are more like sculptures with a story. Visually the work is eye-catching as a sculptural piece but the viewer is invited to hold the book and turn the pages to reveal more about the content.
“My work is about the natural world. I create my sculptural books to take the shape of animals or environments and then I write small poems and use drawings or prints to tell the story of these animals and environments. I am constantly amazed by the variety and beauty of life around me and I want to express this awe in my pieces. I also want to draw other’s attention to it as I think the life of other creatures on this planet is often overlooked in our self involved human world. It is my hope that by showing this work people will take some time to contemplate and care about other living things and the amazing landscapes that make up the world we live in.”
