Kent J. Maxwell

Exhibition: Human Nature | September 19 - October 24th, 2015
ARTIST STATEMENT:
The artwork I create is an immediate impression from the images in my mind, like a still from a movie reel; a fleeting moment meant to remind the viewer of a place they may have actually visited or have dreamed about. The processes and methods I employ while creating art are experimental. They allow me to build textured layers and a low relief onto the two-dimensional canvas. I am drawn to unconventional styles and mediums that allow me to infuse the grittiness and immediacy of real life into my work.  By making each piece with a variety of textures, layers and a specifically chosen pallet, I give an overview of a scene and let the viewer decide the specifics.

ARTIST BIO:
Kent Maxwell first picked up a paintbrush at the age of fifteen and has ever since been drawn to the canvas. Following his formal fine arts education at New England College, Kent developed his craft while under apprenticeships with stained glassed artist Patricia Barkley in Idaho and artist Richard Brown Lethem in Maine. Kent uses experimental, progressive techniques to create low relief textures onto the canvas, integrating various materials into his medium using trowels, paint scrapers, and other methods. Each work contains a unique array of materials, and as such, takes on a particular atmospheric feel. By embracing a looser form and emphasizing ambiance over detail, Kent’s art rekindles his viewer’s imagination, connecting memory, mood, and dreams. Kent currently resides and works on the seacoast of New Hampshire.
